Opportunity to earn extra cash

The Borneo Post - 12 November 2007, By Samuel Aubrey

KUCHING : People in Kuching will soon have an opportunity to earn extra money with the soon-to-be launched jatropha curcas planting scheme.

: Parliamentary Secretary to Ministry of Works, Datuk Yong Khoon Seng said yesterday that participants of the scheme could earn from RM800 up to RM 1 ,500 monthly per hectare, from the third year of planting.

The extra income will surely ease the family's financial burden, he said at the signing ceremony for the scheme between Kuala Lumpur based Bionas Sdn Bhd and Nusada Plantations Sdn Bhd at Kota Padawan Community Hall near here.

Under the scheme, the participants -Will plant the Jatropha Curcas trees (locally known as Jarak trees) in their land using materials provided by Bionas.

The fruits, which will be ripe forharvesting after three years of planting, will be bought by Bionas at its harvest collection centres.

Yong, who is also Member of Parliament for Stampin, hoped his constituents would grab this 'golden opportunity' since Jatropha Curcas is widely recognised as the best alternative to crude palm oil in the production of biodiesel.

"With the world population increasingly becoming environmentally-conscious, the global demand for biodiesel will grow and so will the demand for jatropha curcas", he said.

From his understanding, he said the Jatropha Curcas, with a lifespan of more than 45 years, was easy to plant, maintain and harvest, and could be planted alternatively with other crops.

The participants will be given training and technical advice. by Bionas, in order to achieve the desired yield of harvest," he said.
Nusada Plantations will be the contractor for Bionas in Kuching
